This modem replaces the modem provided by Comcast/Xfinity so that you can return theirs to them and then not pay the monthly modem rental fee that they charge. You will need to call them to activate this modem on your account. They need to flip a switch somewhere, and they are very helpful.This modem works fine. We recently switched to a different internet & content provider and closed our Comcast account so we no longer need this modem.
