Antique English Gold Ridgway 9 1/4" Pitcher Tam O'Shanter October 1 1835 - $95 - (Colonial Heights, VA)
A beautiful antique Ridgway English Pottery pitcher decorated with the famous story of Tam O’Shanter based on scenes from the poem by Robert Burns. It was made by W. Ridgway & Co. in Hanley and dated October 1, 1835. The story told around the outside of the pitcher is of Tam, (prone to drunkenness), carousing in a local pub tavern and seeing the time approaching midnight quickly makes his way home. But in his inebriated and confused state, he claims he was waylaid by a couple of warlock and witches & is forced to run for his life. The other side of the pitcher shows the chase. One of the two witches is shown clinging to the horses tail. The handle of the pitcher shows a hand clutching the tail. Thistle band around the neck . Scrolling on the handle. The pitcher stands apprx 9-1/4” tall by 8” at its widest including the handle. IMPRESSED MARK on bottom says "PUBLISHED BY W. RIDGEWAY & CO., HANLEY OCTOBER 1, 1835." Matte finish to the pottery and the inside is smooth. **There is a small discoloration around the lip, look at the pictures.** The first half of the *W* is not as embossed as the other part, it almost looks like a *V*, but I looked under magnifying glass and it is a *W*.
