The robust, shallowly-curved blade finely wrought of Persian black wootz in the well-known Ladder Pattern and signed in a pair of inlaid cartouches at the right forte, containing the name and title of Shah Abbas I of Iran (e. 1588-1629,) ABBAS SHAH BANDE-YE VILAYET together with the maker’s name, AMAL-E ASSAD ALLAH (Work of Assad Allah.) In its embossed leather over wood scabbard with steel mounts and later applied velvet panels edged in gilt braid, with European collection stamp. Latter 18th century. Worn, losses to leather.
