Antique Gold/Apothecary Balance Scales Brass w/Weights-- Unique Gift - $125 - (Manti, UT)
This is an antique set of Balance Scales that can either be hand held or hung from a hook. They are made of solid brass with brass chains to hold the weighing pans. With it are an incomplete set of brass weights in a small wooden rack and some others that do not fit in the rack. The weights in the rack are labeled 100, 50, 20, 10 and 5 M.C. The ones that do not fit in the rack say 1 ounce and 1/2 ounce, and the square one says 3 DWTS. We found the scales and weights in a solid oak wooden box that has box joint corners and a simple brass latch and appears to be the original container. We could not find any information regarding a maker or previous owner. All of the parts of the brass scales have a rich patina. The wooden box measures about 8.25 inches long, 4.25 inches wide, and 1.75 inches high. It weighs 12.7 ounces. Scales like these were used commonly from the mid 1800's on for weighing gold, gems, or often chemicals used in medical treatments and concoctions. Our best guess of its age is late 1800's to early 1900's but we could not find another identical to it for comparison. We do not recommend this as a working scale. It is much better as a gift for a new pharmacist, attorney, or jeweler. It gives an example of a technology once thought quite modern. Someone once relied on this as a critical tool of their trade and was so happy to have it. We are not sure on pricing. Look it over and make us an offer. We can ship it on UPS at no charge and will accept returns within 30 days for any reason.
