Civil War Model 1840 Cavalry Officer's Saber with Scabbard -Rayskin Grip - $575 - (Thomaston, GA)
Up for sale is a great looking W. Walschied made Model 1840 Cavalry Officer's saber and original scabbard . The grip is all original rayskin with new wire wrap that I put on it due to broken wire traces that I found just under the pommel cap . So I had some made just as the original ones were and installed them myself . The blade washer was replaced as well , and all was mounted on the W . Walschied - Solingen made blade which is 35-3/4"s L x 1-3/16"s W x 3/8"s thick at the ricasso , and there are app 3-5 nicks in the blade's edge . There is no etching to the blade that I can tell at all and as all Officer's had to buy their own saber - this might have been a budget matter or it was going to be used in the field and was not needed . The quillion of this Officer's model embellished hilt was bent forward as was commonly done in that time period or accidentally bent too far possibly from a fall or a dropped saber . The scabbard is in great un-dented condition with the common aged patina of a 150+ year old scabbard . No active rust that I can tell of on the saber or the scabbard , however the blade does have some age spotting going on in places near the tip as well as some pitting throughout . I sell and ship to the lower 48 states only and this is an as is sale with no returns - so be sure before you buy .
