A letter from the Court of Commissioners of Alabama Claims, Washington,D.C., dated December 13, 1882, and signed by the presiding Justice H. G. Wells. The Alabama Claims Commission was established to deal with the wartime destruction of the United States merchant vessels by the Confederate States raider CSS Alabama that had been built and outfitted in England. The claims levied against the British because of their involvement resulted in over two decades of court arguments following the cessation of hostilites between the United States of American and the Confederate States of America. This original letter has been on display in our South Carolina Civil War Museum for over a decade. The condition is excellent without any tears or distortions of the ink or foxing of the paper. The folding creases on the outside of the letter are soiled. We have maintained it under the proper lighting conditions and atmospheres to prevent aging.
