The species was introduced to the southeastern United States in about 1780. Growing wild the rose is a high climbing shrub, frequently attaining the height of 33 feet with support, is thorny and generously supplied with leaves of a vivid green. Its bloom time is in the early Spring but favorable conditions will produce a second flowering in the Fall of the year. In color, the rose is a waxy white with large golden center and the petals are of an exquisite velvety texture, and have a lovely scent. Flowers are 6–10 centimeters (2.4–3.9 in) diameter.
