Dr. Melanie J. Springer, Associate Professor of Politics at the University of California in Santa Cruz will discuss voter turnout and various factors that encourage or hinder political participation, such as mobilization and voting rights. The public is welcome to attend. Dr. Springer’s academic interests center on American Politics and on understanding the historical evolution of voting and elections. She studies the ways electoral and political institutions influence opportunities for political participation, including federalism’s role in shaping past and recent policy-making in the American states, the impact of Southern politics, and the ever-changing universe of parties and partisanship in the United States.
