General Information Red Head Fountain Grass is a great plant that could be used in many different areas of your landscape. This grass can grow to be moderate in height, up to five feet tall. This grass works great as an accent in any area. It can be used in borders, beds, in massed plantings or even in containers. The flower can also be used for cut flower purposes. This grass grows in a clump form with foliage arching out in all directions. The leaves are flat and narrow. The leaves emerge green in the spring, retaining their color throughout the growing season, before taking on a nice golden-yellow color when cool weather arrives. The flower heads grow on stems above the foliage. They have a bottle brush shape and can be up to 3 inches wide and 10 inches long. Purple buds emerge mid summer, turning to a silvery deep pink color, turning a golden brown as the cooler weather sets in.Additional Information Pennisetum alopecuroides ‘Red Head’ grows to a height of 3 to 5 feet, with a spread of 2 to 4 feet. It is recommended for climate zones 5 to 9. It grows best in full sunlight. Red Head does best in well drained soils with average amounts of water. It is not known to have any serious disease or insect issues.
