Antique Nigerian “Faux” Coral Beads, 30”, 27 Varied Beads, C. 1900 - $185 - (Santa Fe, NM)

Necklace of antique “faux” coral beads from Nigeria, circa 1900, made with powdered glass, either molded or wound. Real Mediterranean coral was used for hundreds of years in West Africa, and brought in during the slave trade. It was an important part of the ceremonial regalia of the Kings, especially in Nigeria, but it was loved by all Africans as well. So bead makers began to make simulations for “every day” use, and all became well loved and used by the regular natives. It is also said that the European, Venetian beadmakers made glass “coral” trade beads as well, but the ones I am listing were either made by the Yoruba, or the Bida of Nigeria who made the more shiny red wound ones, 27 beads total; 30” L; Nice variety of different shapes, colors, ages of highly collectible beads; Tubes up to 1 1/2” in length. _gsrx_vers_804 (GS 7.0.8 (804))
