Baroque Danish lidded silver tankard - $3,250 - (Tappahannock, VA)

This baroque style fine silver (.826/.840) tankard was produced in Copenhagen. The hallmarks indicate the three towers of Copenhagen and the makers mark SV.T. for Svend Toxvaerd. It is a large lidded tanker measuring 16 1/4" (41 cm.) in height and weighing 29.65 troy ounces (922 grams). The lid and sides are covered in a tooled design of vines and flowers. A lion on the thumb opener is facing a shield. The three feet are formed by lions resting on the world. Within the tankard the maker has mounted on the wall five marks to measure the amount of ale in the container. Mounted in the top is a Gustavus III (Swedish) coin dated 1776. On the sides are three old Danish coins, one dated 1685.
