For sale: Antique Venetian African Tribal Trade Mixed Millefiori, Feather & Fancy Bead Long Strand Necklace. 100 beads total strung on cotton raffia. Beads are in good to excellent condition and some show signs of light use wear that may include scratches, pitting, scuffing and small chips. There are quite a nice assortment of Venetian trade bead styles in this necklace including, millefiori, fancy/aventurine, eye and feather beads. This necklace be able to be worn as a double strand if you have a very small head or if a removable clasp is added (last 2 photos show example of this), otherwise it will be a single long strand. Millefiori are one of the most famous of all the Venetian beads. Small slices of colored glass are fused onto a molten cane of glass, creating bright floral patterns. The hot bead is then pressed into a mold to give it its shape. African Trade beads are decorative beads that were used as currency between the end of the 15th century thru the 20th century in exchange for goods such as palm oil, ivory, spices, gold and slaves. The majority of these beads were created in places like Venice, Bohemia, and Holland. They were valued by Africans as a sign of wealth, social status, currency and adornment.
