Two Metal Clarinets. "Cleveland" & Silver-Plated "Rene Duval." Repair Projects. - $325 - (Yellow Springs, OH)
Travel back in time with this pair of vintage metal clarinets. One has a case, and one doesn't. The one without a case is stamped on the bell, Cleveland Musical Instrument Co., Cleveland, Ohio. My understanding is that, from 1919 to 1925, Cleveland Musical Instrument Company was an independent instrument manufacturer. Then, H.N. White bought it and created its bargain line known as Cleveland, then Cleveland Band Instrument. This one is stamped C29620, which I believe indicates that it was made in about 1935 by H.N. White. In the 1935, H.N. White/Cleveland catalog, there is a model 607 metal clarinet that looks like this one. The pads are ancient, and some are missing. Most of the mechanisms are stiff and in need of work. At least one of the mechanism pins is missing. It is heavily tarnished, but, under the tarnish, it seems to have quite good cosmetics. I cannot find a dent on it. The mouthpiece is made of a semi-clear Lucite-looking material and in unmarked. The mouthpiece corking is ancient. The mouthpiece holder corking is gone. The ligature is unmarked. It is a repair project. The one with a case is stamped on the bell, Rene Duval. It is also marked "MADE IN ITALY" with a serial number of 25,538. The bell, mouthpiece holder, and keys looks to be silver plated. The pads are ancient. Some of the mechanisms are stiff. It does seem to be complete. The mouthpiece is stamped only, FRANCE and X3. It comes in its hard case with a lyre. The case is in solid functional and structural condition. The clarinet is a repair project.
