Palung-Burmese Traditional Hat worn by Married Women (with White Beads) - $40 - (Richmond, VA)
This is a traditional hat worn by women of the Palong people, a minority ethnic group within Burma (now Myanmar). Hats with white beads are worn by married women. This colorful hat was handmade by the local people and purchased by a family member when touring the Inle Lake area of Burma in 1996. It has since been on display on a shelf at home and never worn. The photos fully describe the yarn in various colors that make up the “pom-poms” and the tassel on the top. The sides are ribbed fabric with sequins sewn on. The hat at the bottom is approximately 7" in diameter and 9" at the top. The height is 3". Now retired, we are getting rid of the items that don’t interest our children and grandchildren.Note: About 70% of the people in Burma are Burman; but there are at least 60 additional ethnic groups in the country. The Palang people are a group within the Karen, which is in turn a group within the Shan. The Shan, which comprise about 7% of the population, are Buddhist, have their own language and probably migrated from the Yunnan province of China around the 13th Century.
