GORHAM STERLING TRAY c1865 - MASK HANDLES - GREEK REVIVAL - 170 OZ. A monumental Civil-War (c1865) period Gorham sterling silver hand decorated tea tray. A letter from a major New York auction house Silver Specialist discussing this tray, the design and workmanship will accompany the tray. Classic oval form with hand chased scrolling leaf and berry rim. Center with hand engraved masks framed in leaf and floral alternating with spear framed anthemion and bell flower, united by scrolling, partial shaded column in the Greek Revival manner. The tapering vine handles crowned with classical maiden masks with ribbon and bow. Never monogrammed. This monumental c1865 Gorham sterling tea service tray is 33 inches across handles 18 1/2 wide and weighs 170 1/2 (standard) ounces. Hallmarked as shown. In very fine condition. Rich sterling patina.
