Up for your consideration is this lovely rare set of 1800's antique 12 bronze gold weight Akan Ashanti tribal knife rest...These are 12 different tribal figurines is a beautiful bronze with polychrome and gold overlay....hand crafted by George Heyde Dresden, Germany....These figures used as gold weights and 9 Cm...total weight 2kg....These are in great condition with the usual wear from aging over the years....they measure from 1 3/4" tall to 3" tall x 2 3/4" long x 1/2" wide....what a great grouping....RARE!!! Ashanti weights such as these have a variety of accoutrements such as boxes, spoons, and blances used to hold or measure gold dust...A full kit would included boxes, spoons balance and around forty weights, this was known as futoo and carried wrapped together in cloth...the futoo would then be put into a leather container or wooden box, or if the owner was a wealthy man...a cast-brass kuduo box...These boses, fulled of gold dust could be buried with their owners and dug up if needed, or hidden in times of trouble....The weight itself is made of bronze or brass which was obtained though trade in European imports from the late 15th century onwards....weights were cast using the lost-wax method which is still the best way of preserving fine modeling details...
