Outstanding Ethnographics New Guinea Figural Sculpture Anthromorphic FACE ! - $145 - (La Quinta, CA)
With inset Cowrie shells in the eyes, here is a fascinating wood carving, from Sepik River area -- New Guinea. Rubbed with orangey powder , for pigmentation, it measures just under 14 inches in height. Ancestoral figure, may have been a deceased child, since the gender is not obvious. Sometimes figural forms were also kept near burial grounds. Exact age is unknown but appears to date from approximately 1940 - 1950's. Over 50 years old is what we believe. There is some wood cracking in the base near his or her left foot. Arms hang at sides there is a Duck bill below the face, which has a Bird-like beak. Carved decorated geometric ears. The Sepik river carvings are in many museums all over the world, as this area may have been the most prolific. See " Art Of the South Seas" by Ralph Linton and Paul S. Wingert.
