Antique Ambrotype in Half Case w/Brass Insert Younger South Carolina Gentleman - $39 - (Statesboro, GA)

This is an antique Ambrotype in a half case with brass all around the picture. The subject of the picture is a Younger South Carolina Gentleman and it is a pre-Civil War era photo. The gentleman's cheeks have been tinted a pinkish color. This print viewing area is an oval approximately 1-1/2" X 1-7/8" and the overall is 2-1/2" X 3". The case bottom half including the glass is in relatively good condition for its age, the back does have some of the surface missing (see photos). The top half is not present. Ambrotype was introduced in the 1850's and was replaced in the 1860's. It is a photograph on glass made by a variant of the wet plate collodion process (Wikipedia). This is a rare vintage photo that would make a great addition to your collection for its historical photograph value.
