Vintage AsBESTos brand San Iron, Made in USA, Model 72-B. Heavy cast iron insert has embossed lettering, outer cover is metal, with latch and wooden handle. Asbestos sad irons were made by Dover Manufacturing, of Dover Ohio, in the early 1900's. This model featured a lining inside the 'hood' that had a layer of asbestos in it to keep the top cooler than the hot part that your ironed your clothes with. It essentially 'bottled up' the heat. The wooden handle stayed cool and the top part, the cover, was touted to stay cooler than 'blood' temperature. The added layer was also to help keep the flatiron part of the iron hotter longer so less reheating thus alleviating the 'housewife's ironing problems'. Locking mechanism on the cover keeps the sadiron in place and makes for ease in changing. The steel cover was apparently nickel plated but a lot of that has worn away with time. A sad iron is basically a flat iron. The word sad means solid. Excellent decor in your farmhouse theme, or in a retro bathroom or laundry room! Hefty at almost 6 lbs before packing up for shipping.
