Old Forest Service Identification TREE Sign ALPINE FIR - $30 - (Tignall, GA)
This is an old Forest Service tree identification sign. It is made of paper and measures approx. 9" x 11" . It is fairly thick paper stock which is approx. .014" thick as compared to regular blue-line which is approx. .003" thick. It reads: "This Tree is an Alpine Fir (Abies lasiocarpa) Alpine fir is found usually with Engelmann spruce or other species at high altitudes. Alpine fir is distinguished by a long conical crown terminates in a spear-like point. The leaves are flat and soft to the touch. The cones are upright and when ripe the cone scales fall away from the central stem. The bark of the trunk is hard and shallowly seamed, while that of the branches and young trees is smooth and ashy gray or white. Alpine fir commonly reaches a height of 60 to 90 feet, a diameter of 24 to 24 inches, and an age of 140 to 200 years. TO KEEP THE FOREST PRODUCTIVE PREVENT FOREST FIRES." I was told from the elderly couple that I acquired these from that they were in an old Forest Service building that they had bought years ago and that's where they have been stored until I got them. According to the information I've gathered this was the official FS emblem used from 1920-1938. This one is not dated . This one has light wear and smudges and there is a tack/nail hole at the top within the emblem. Also a staple to the left of the emblem and a tiny pin hole to the right.
