Old Forest Service Identification TREE Sign BLUE SPRUCE - $30 - (Tignall, GA)
This is an old Forest Service sign. It is made of paper and measures approx. 9" x 11" . It is fairly thick paper stock which is approx. .014" thick as compared to regular blue-line which is approx. .003" thick. It reads as follows:"This Tree Is A BLUE SPRUCE (Picea pungens)......Blue Spruce, often called Colorado blue spruce, was discovered in 1862 by Dr. C. C. Parry on the slopes of Pikes Peak. It reaches optimum development in the mountains of Colorado, but is also found in Wyoming, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico. It may be identified by its smooth twigs, stiff sharp-pointed needles, pendent cones 3 to 4 inches long, and deeply furrowed ash-colored bark. Blue Spruce is a long-lived tree, commonly reaching a height of 70 to 90 feet and a diameter of 16 to 24 inches. Occurs naturally along streams and in cool situations at elevations of 6,000 to 8,500 feet. It has been transplanted over much of the northern half of the United States. Below that reads: To Keep The Forest Productive PREVENT FOREST FIRES." I was told from the elderly couple that I acquired these from that they were in an old Forest Service building that they had bought years ago and that's where they have been stored until I got them. This one is not dated . According to the information I've gathered this was the official FS emblem used from 1920-1938. This one has light wear and smudges and there is a 3/8" tack/nail hole at the top along with a staple within and around the emblem. Please check out my other listings.
