Old Forest Service Identification TREE Sign ALLIGATOR JUNIPER - $30 - (Tignall, GA)
This is an old Forest Service sign. It is made of paper and measures approx. 9" x 11" . It is fairly thick paper stock which is approx. .014" thick as compared to regular blue-line which is approx. .003" thick. It reads as follows: "This Tree Is An ALLIGATOR JUNIPER (Juniperus achyphloea).....The name is derived from the bark, resembling alligator skin. This Juniper sometimes reaches a diameter of eight feet and an age of 1,000 years. Because of its durability, the wood is valuable for fence posts. It is also highly prized as fuel. The berries are eaten by most species of wild animals and many birds. The older trees are very resistant to fire, but seedlings are easily killed. Repeated fires in past years, by preventing production, have converted large areas in the Southwest into brush fields. Juniper forests can in time be restored on such areas, if fires are kept out. Below that reads PREVENT FOREST FIRES". I was told from the elderly couple that I acquired these from that they were in an old Forest Service building that they had bought years ago and that's where they have been stored until I got them. This one is not dated . According to the information I've gathered this was the official FS emblem used from 1920-1938. This one has light wear and smudges/stains and there is a round 3/8" nail hole at the top by the left side of the emblem and a staple remains inside the emblem. Please check out my other listings.
