Old 1932 Forest Service Identification TREE Sign ENGELMANN SPRUCE - $100 - (Tignall, GA)
This is an old 1932 Forest Service sign. It is made of paper and measures approx. 9" x 11" . It is fairly thick paper stock which is approx. .014" thick as compared to regular blue-line which is approx. .003" thick. It reads as follows: "This Tree is An ENGELMANN SPRUCE (Picea Engelmannii)......Spruce is the world's most valuable wood for paper pulp. It is also used for violins and for frames of airplanes. It tolerates more shade than any other native tree, although it does not grow rapidly except in sunlight. A little splindling spruce a few inches in diameter, which has had to endure much shade from neighboring trees, is often just as old as a near-by thrifty spruce a foot or two in diameter.Spruce forests are so dense that a fire, once started there, usually leaps into the tops of the trees. Such a fire becomes so hot that it consumes not only the trees but the soil also, and Nature may take a century to heal the resulting scar on the mountain side". Below that reads "To Keep The Mountains Green ...PREVENT FOREST FIRES". It has been stored in an old FS building that was purchased decades ago by an elderly couple. It is dated 1932. According to the information I've gathered this was the official FS emblem used from 1920-1938. I have other tree signs listed with the same emblem but are not dated. It shows light wear and has some discoloration around the edges. There is a tack/nail hole at the top within the emblem. Please check out my other listings.
