Marian Anderson was an American contralto who became an important figure in the struggle for African American artists to overcome racial prejudice in the United States during the mid twentieth century. She became the first African American performer at the Metropolitan Opera in 1955, worked for several years as a delegate to the United Nations Human Rights Committee giving concerts all over the world as a goodwill ambassador for the United States Department of State and participated in the civil rights movement and sang at the March on Washington in 1963. She was the recipient of numerous awards and honors including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1963, The Kennedy Center Honors in 1978, the National Medal of Arts in 1986 and a Grammy for Lifetime Achievement in 1991.
