This is a PAIR OF VINTAGE 1960 - 70 era ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR SKETCHES BY JAZZ WRITER - ENTHUSIAST / BOOK AUTHOR STEPHEN LONGSTREET (1907 - 2002). The original SIGNED 8-1/2" x 11-1/2" (approx. sizes) mounted watercolor & ink sketch - drawings were inspired as a gift to famed Jazz researcher / writer PHIL EVANS. The first of the Longstreet watercolor drawings features a characterization of Jazz Cornetist "BIX" BEDERBECKE with personal handwritten message "FOR PHIL EVANS, WHO WILL DEFEND BIX TO THE END". The second drawing features a characterization of who appears to be "TAIL GATE TROMBONE" Musician EDWARD "KID" ORY (1886 - 1973), with handwritten message "TO PHIL EVANS: A LOVER OF THE OLD JAZZ". The 2 sketches were formerly combined as a collage, thereby the characteristic S over L initial Stephen Longstreet logo - type occurs on one of the sketches next to the signature. However, each sketch is signed by Mr. Longstreet. The logo helps date the time period of the pair. These wonderful images are part of a personal, continuing conversation between two good friends - Longstreet & Evans. Phil Evans (passed away in Bakersfield, California 1995) was known for his writings as well as for co-founding the Memorial Jazz Festival located in Davenport, Iowa.
