Beggar's Bowl - 1899 Qajar Sufi Kashkul - Persian Islamic - Sheikh Bahai Poetry Estimated 1899 Made in Iran. This kashkul or beggar’s bowl made from half of a coco-de-mer shell would have been carried by a dervish who had renounced all worldly possessions, subsisting only on almsgiving from devout Muslims. Beggars’ bowls were often highly decorated and this one is no exception: intricate Sufi motifs, Arabic prayers, and Persian verses cover the entire surface of the shell. ? In addition, there are carved images of Sufi dervishes joined together, symbols and calligraphy of meaningful poetry by Sheikh Bahai. Good condition for its age as shown in pictures.
