10,000 Villages Nativity Retablos / Image Box Peru Stars Holy Family Nativity--Retablos, or Image boxes were originally brought to Peru from Spain, portraying scenes of faith and daily life. This ornament is part of this centuries-old art form. Tiny figurines are hand-molded from plaster paste. "Boxes" vary from whitewashed wood to dried out gourds or delicately emptied eggshells--each one covered with intricate , colorful freehand designs.
