CIRCA 1778 BEAUTIFULLY HAND COLORED MAP BY THOS. BOWEN ENTITLED: "THE RUSSIAN EMPIRE, IN EUROPE & ASIA , with THE NORTHERN DISCOVERIES BETWEEN ASIA & NORTH AMERICA - THOS. BOWEN - GEOG(RAPHER)" A wonderful and beautifully accomplished very large format 19 3/4" x 14" folding copperplate BANKES of LONDON printed map drawn and engraved by THOS. BOWEN - circa 1778. Thomas Bowen (died 1790) was an English engraver of charts. He was the son of Emanuel Bowen (1693/4–1767),[1] map engraver to George II and Louis XV. He died in Clerkenwell workhouse early in 1790. Original HAND COLORED copperplate-engraved map by English cartographer Thomas Bowen Thomas Bowen (fl. 1767-1790) followed his father as an eminent mapmaker in London. After his father, Emanuel Bowen, died Thomas took over his father's business and inherited his father’s position as mapmaker to George II and Louis XV. Although similarly hard-working and respected, like his father Thomas died in a debtor’s prison. ANY ABERRATIONS IN THE ACCOMPANYING PHOTOS ARE A RESULT OF THE UNEVEN FLASH - INCLUDING TOP RIGHT CREASE - WHICH IS OVERLY PRONOUNCED.
