During the flood season, they once lived on the high ground of the unique Colorado River delta, an environment similar to that of the valley of the lower Nile River. Like ancient Egyptians, the Cocopah practiced a form of agriculture dependent upon the flood waters of the river. As these waters receded, the Cocopah followed after, with long digging sticks and planting seed, moving their camps down, closer to the river, practicing a form of agriculture known to man since his earliest crop-growing times. The ancient history of the Cocopah is related to that of the rest of the Hokan-derived Yuman linguistic family. All of the surviiving eastern members of this Yuman language group live today in southwestern Arizona and in Sonora, either near the Colorado River or close to its tributaties. They also can be found in southern California. ....Whenever possible after a battle, Cocopah took the scalps of the bravest, slain, enemy warriors. Cocopah fighters did so believing that if certain rituals, dances and ceremonies were performed with the captured scalp, the powers of the dead warrior might be transferred to the victorious one. Some Topics In The Book Include: Cocopah Creation Stories Interactions With Spanish Explorers Cocopah Face Paintings Warfare And Battles Cocopah Games And Ceremon
