This book is part of the limited edition Indian Tribal Series that was produced in the mid 1970's. First and only edition of only 15,000 ever made. It is hand-signed by the tribal chief at the time of its publication. This book covers the history, culture, tradition, struggles for freedom, current life of the tribe and much more. It is 100+ pages and is made with a beautiful blue textured soft cover, with silver lettering on the side and an embossed design on the front. The book is signed by chief Gerald Peltier. It comes with high gloss pages and a wealth of rare photos, some of which are shown here. Potawatomi Territory and Origins Settled along the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River regions in states such as Michigan and Wisconsin. Ultimately they were moved to areas in Kansas and Oklahoma. The Potawatomi were originally part of the Algonquin Indian group which eventually broke off into the 3 tribes of Chippewa, Ottawa, and Potawatomi. From the book it reads: "The Potawatomi's penchant for gambling at sporting events extended beyond lacrosse. One of these was footracing. Often these races were massive events. At Detroit, footraces between Potawatomi, Ottawa, and Canadians took place that contained as many as 1,500 participants. The course was from Detroit to a Potawatomi village on a well-made road. The red men and the white men both gambled on these races with the Indians putting up furs against the trading goods of the French."
