Hauber&Reuther #417 Beer Stein Stoneware - Etched, 0.5L, Pewter Lid - Lohengrin’s Departure. The theme of this stein is taken from a medieval legend which tells the tale of the “Swan Knight”. Today, the story is most often associated with the Richard Wagner opera “Lohengrin”, first performed at Weimar in 1850. In this scene, following the failure of his wife Elsa to keep her vow to never inquire about his name or descent, Lohengrin prepares to depart forever in his swan boat.The artwork is reproduced from a painting by Wilhelm von Kaulbach (1805-1874) entitled “Des Schwanenritters Abschied” (The Swan Knight’s Departure).The Freising, Bavaria stoneware factory that ultimately produced steins with the well known “HR” mark, was founded in 1876 by Adam Schön and Max Borho under the name “Schön & Borho”. Shortly after that, Borho’s stake in the factory fell into the hands of Albert Hauber, and the business was renamed “Schön, Hauber & Co.” In 1878, Schön sold his interest to Hauber, who continued the business as “The Hauber Co.” for the next four years. In 1882, Hans Reuther became a partner in the company, which was then renamed “Hauber and Reuther” and operated as such until ceasing production circa 1909. For practical purposes, the beer stein output of the Freising factory during the six years before becoming Hauber & Reuther is quite similar to that produced in the post-1882 period. Consequently, no attempt has been made to separate the steins that may have predated the actual Hauber & Reuther partnership.
