Handsome vintage half hull model of a Friendship sloop by Willard Shepard, Noank, Connecticut, circa 1960s, carved and varnished wood with integral frame, the reverse bearing the original descriptive label, the overall dimensions 9" x 7-1/4" x 1". A touch of light wear to frame, otherwise very good, attractive condition, with rich, appealing patina. The label reads, in full: "FRIENDSHIP SLOOP. Built in Friendship, Maine, by the Morse family, these fishing sloops were some of the finest workboats in America in 1900. A small copy of the Gloucester schooners, this boat was 28 feet overall, 9 feet beam, 5 feet draught. SHEPARD SHIPYARD MODELS. Willard Shepard, Owner, Noank, Conn." Shepard (1914 - 1988) was a well-known carver of Bellamy-style American eagles, figureheads, and other maritime-related folk sculpture.
