Deadeyes from a sailing ship's rigging / lignum vitae & wrought iron / c. 1860s Antique pair of exceptional lignum vitae and hand-forged iron deadeyes from the rigging of a sailing ship, c. mid-19th century. Ropes from the rigging would have passed through the holes of the deadeyes, which are made from lignum vitae (one of the hardest woods in the world) in order to withstand the friction and intense pressure of the lines. Handsome craftsmanship and rare sculptural form. The pair maintain the rich patina of objects many years in active use at sea.
