Antique Victorian Bog Oak Mourning Necklace~Hand Carved & Double Knotted~ca1880 - $200 - (State Road, NC)

Up for sale is this antique ca 1880 Victorian bog oak mourning 32" necklace ~ 51 grams. Each of the various sized 56 beads was hand carved and double hand knotted with wool and/or hair. Knowing that the majority of the owner's family was from Ireland combined with the look and the feel of the necklace, I believe the beads were made from bog oak. Bog oak is fossilized oak wood that was found in peat marshes in Ireland and was used during the Victorian era in the production of mourning jewelry.
