Antique Victorian Masonic Handshake Brass Good Luck Horseshoe Eagle Bookends - $277 - (Cass City, MI)
ITEM DESCRIPTION Antique Victorian Masonic Handshake Brass Good Luck Horseshoe Eagle Bookends 8TEN1944 SKU: 5305053294 At a glance, you may wonder what these bookends mean by a "Good" handshake. Look again and you'll notice these two design elements are suspended between a HORSESHOE. It's actually a clever, rather subtle Good Luck message -with a solid touch patriotism in the form of the 3D Eagle perched on top. The horseshoe, handshake and eagle imagery on this set have been interpreted as Masonic symbols -even suggesting the hands depict the fraternal order's secret handshake. Everyone, however, can appreciate the traditional sentiment behind this imagery: the handshake symbolizes the honor system; the eagle represents patriotism and the horseshoe is a sign of good fortune. They've been painted gold, but could easily be stripped to the original brass patina. The surface wear on the bottom of the bases clearly shows their true brass composition (see photo). There are no breaks or repairs. Heavy and strong, they'll hold your books without fail -unlike so many light weight bookends today. Interestingly, one weighs exactly two pounds - the other is 3 ounces lighter.
